Pretty Valley Hut, Falls Creek, Victoria, Australia
Australian Landscape Photography by Michael Boniwell. All images copyright. This is image is suitable for enormous prints. View Larger on Chockstone Photography Pretty Valley Hut (also sometimes referred to as Horsemans Hut) resides at the top a ridge behind Falls Creek ski village. The hut dates back to the 1930's but was rebuilt in 1984 from weatherboards and hardwood paling with a corrugated iron roof. Sitting amongst some lovely gums, with the horse yards nearby it makes for a tranquil spot to camp if you're hiking through. Alternatively, you can forge out from Falls Creek and return as a day trip. Allow a couple of hours walking to reach to the hut via Pretty Valley Road. Obviously in winter you'll need snowshoes or x-country skis. The track is well marked and mostly snow ploughed, but can be covered over, particularly on the ridge crest. As always, consider your plan in the event of whiteout conditions and freezing temperatures. On this particular adventure the ski lifts were not operating, adding a steep climb to the start of the journey. I arrived at the hut to find it wonderfully fogged in with low cloud making for some great atmosphere. I worked the scene well into the late afternoon, until the light faded. When I eventually returned in the dark by torch light, quite fatigued, visibility was reduced to a few feet at best and I was grateful to spot the lights of the village.
