Built in the 1930s by the Australian Estates of Cooma, Pockets Hut was originally a luxury homestead with electricity, running water and comfortable furniture. Residing in the northern end of Kosciuszko National Park it makes for a great walk from one of several directions. Coming from Blue Waterholes it is about 23km return, and considered challenging, however there are easier approaches.
Hiking in from Pockets Saddle Road, past Oldfields Hut, it was closer to 10km return, and reasonably flat. We camped the night in our tents, in order to photograph both sunset and dawn, and enjoyed every minute. This was the scene at sunset, with the last of the golden light catching the top of the hills behind the little dwelling, and lighting up a few interesting clouds.
In the morning the scene was heavily backlit, so despite some attractive fog, the composition was not improved by the sunrise light. The walk out was, somehow, easier than the walk in, and we left in high spirits, buoyed by a great experience and hopefully also a great image.
