View Larger on Chockstone Photography If you had to pick one quintessential Victorian high country walk, the first that would spring to most hiker’s minds would be the classic Mt Hotham to Mt Feathertop trek along “the razorback”. Usually done as an overnighter, it offers grand views from the ridgeline, easy access to the trail head, a hut and stream at the camp site, the chance to tag a peak, and not too many altitude changes. The only problem, of course, is that it is possibly over loved. A nice spring weekend can see zero car parks left, and a swarm of tents. This issue can easily be solved by going mid-week instead, or during winter using snow shoes. Be aware however, that as tame as it sounds it can still become serious. I’ve experienced white out conditions in the snow with no visible sign of the track, and in summer you need to be mindful that there is zero water to be found until Federation Hut. You should have enough liquid to allow for an unplanned camp and return hike the next day.
