Built in 1901 Norah Head Lighthouse on the New South Wales central coast is a popular tourist attraction. Being only 90 minutes drive from Sydney it is reasonably accessible to city dwellers. People enjoy walking along Lighthouse Beach and exploring the rocks below the lighthouse grounds. You can even stay in the heritage listed Lighthouse Keepers Quarters.
My interest in the area has always been for photography. Given the significant distance from home in Victoria, it has represented a challenge to be in the right place at the right time, with a chance at some good light. On this occasion our boy and I were mid-way through a photography trip and decided to investigate what sunset might bring us.
I selected my composition based on wave action and the direction of the setting sun, and then proceeded to reshoot many hundreds of variations until it was too dark to continue. Later I chose an image that contained the most interesting foreground action that also had a complimentary sky. The waves were exciting to witness, so hopefully this photograph captures that dramatic mood.
