Mt Hotham towards Mt Feathertop, Victoria, Australia
Australian Landscape Photography by Michael Boniwell. All images copyright. This is image is suitable for enormous prints. View Larger on Chockstone Photography The view from Mount Hotham looking towards Mount Feathertop is arguably the most impressive mountain vista in Victoria’s alpine region. It is also very accessible, requiring only a drive up the mountain, the purchase of a day pass, and a little wandering around in the cold whilst trying not to be run down by snow boarders. The most gruelling aspect would probably be the parking to which my solution has always been to get there crazy early. This way you can park right in the ski village of Hotham Heights and avoid having to shuttle up from the lower areas, down towards Dinner Plain. The other advantage of an early start is that it can grant you the ability to witness a dawn such as the one pictured here, lighting up those gorgeous peaks. Obviously this is only possible if you have some luck with the weather. Having visited Hotham many times over several decades I will say that even a forecast of “high visibility” can be met with low cloud obscuring all. Do not let that turn you away, however, because the experience is still well worth the effort and makes moments like this particular morning all the more special. For the hikers among us, the ridgeline on the left of the frame is a walk called the razorback, which takes you all the way to Mount Feathertop. In winter it is a serious affair and should not be taken lightly. In other seasons it becomes far more popular, almost too popular, though please note the lack of water, which makes summer almost as problematic as winter.
