Lake Dartmouth, Mitta Valley, Victoria, Australia
Australian Landscape Photography by Michael Boniwell. All images copyright. This is image is suitable for enormous prints. View Larger on Chockstone Photography Lake Dartmouth resides in the picturesque Mitta Valley not far from the little villages of Dartmouth and Mitta Mitta. Built for hydroelectric power, irrigation and water supply, Dartmouth Dam is the largest capacity dam in Victoria, the highest in Australia and biggest earth walled dam in the southern hemisphere. It collects water from the high-country snow fields for later release into Lake Hume and the Murray River. The reservoir is huge and quite popular for fishing and water sports. You can access the lake in about an hour from Wodonga or alternatively take the very windy but utterly beautiful two hour drive up from Omeo where there are many options for camping along the way as well as places where you can join guided white water rafting and kayaking tours. My interest in this location is naturally for landscape photography and this led me to explore the surrounding hills, including Mt Benambra which boast a fantastic view from the fire tower lookout where this image was captured. If you’re reading this and thinking you’ll pop up there yourself, please be aware that the summit “road” out of Dartmouth is actually a single lane four-wheel drive only track, with a cliff on one side. It is so narrow for much of the steep climb that reversing out to accommodate oncoming traffic could prove very dangerous indeed. The views from the Dartmouth Dam Wall are equally as amazing and have a nice, sealed road with toilets and picnic tables. I can also recommend the Mitta General Store which, during our visits, had a great selection of delicious homemade pies.
