View Larger on Chockstone Photography Victoria's Mornington Peninsula is a very popular tourist destination with a number of coastal villages and amazing beaches not far from Melbourne. The western end can be quite crowed, particularly in peak season, whilst the eastern side of the cape offers a more relaxed vibe with less people but still plenty to see and do. Among those options includes visiting the little town of Flinders which has nice collection of antique stores and crafty shops under quaint verandahs, as well as their historic general store and post office. When you’re hungry, upmarket restaurants sit beside takeaway cafes so you can still do fish & chips on the pier. Flinders Pier has great views across Western Port to Phillip Island. At 250 metres long, there’s plenty of room to find a spot to fish, or relax. My interest in the pier has, of course, always been of a photographic nature. Over the course of a few decades I’ve attempted to capture many a sunrise here, but it proved to be a difficult location to photograph, at least to the level of “wow factor” that I was set upon creating. Often wind can be an issue with piers and with Bass Strait nearby you’d think that would be the case here, but, whilst certainly breezy, it had always been manageable. Instead the problem was simply me, I wanted something amazing, colourful and absorbing. As luck would have it that special morning did eventually arrive during a photography trip with our young lad. The two of us had cameras set up as usual, and were treated to one of the most spectacular dawns I have ever witnessed. What an inspiring sight to behold and share. Hopefully this image conveys what we were feeling on that fiery morn.
