According to the Oxford English Dictionary, Greek anemōnē means "daughter of the wind", from ánemos the wind god. They're usually white but may be pinkish, blue or lilac; and like violets, they bloom in very early spring (usually March or very early April). ===== There are about 120 species in the family Ranunculaceae. The genus is closely related to the Pasque flower and Hepatica, other wildflowers which appear in early spring. === As with violets also pictured here, they do grow wild but have been hybridized and used as ornamentals so are popular in gardens in temperate regions of the world. === Canon Rebel XTi (Cropped)
