Spring Gold
A flower blossoms for its own joy. ~ Oscar Wilde Featured in MIDWESTERN US PHOTOGRAPHY Forsythia; a flowering shrub in the Oleaceae family (olive) named for William Forsyth (1737–1804), a Scottish botanist who was royal head gardener and a founding member of the Royal Horticultural Society. There are about 11 species, most native to China but one to southeast Europe. = This is Forsythia intermedia, or Border Forsythia, a cross between two older varieties (F. viridissima and F. suspensa). The flowers bloom before the leaves and are such a brilliant yellow they’re visible at twilight. This makes forsythia very popular in parks and gardens throughout temperate regions of the globe. On average, they reach 4 feet in height but some varieties can be as tall as 20 feet and qualify as trees. In Midwest America, the Forsythia blossoms are among the earliest harbingers of spring.
