Spring Begins At Oneida Waterfall
Spring begins a little later at Oneida Falls than it does down in the valleys, especially this year. There are still some remnants of snow and ice near this spot, due to the unusually long, cold and very snowy winter of 2011, here in north eastern Pennsylvania. There are plenty of buds on the trees in the glen, but very few blossoms or new leaves to be found. The recent spring thaw and heavy rains have provided an extremely active runoff here. This is the first time that I've ever seen the watery "veil" of Oneida stretched across the entire span of this waterfall, without a single break in the action. This waterfall usually has two or three smaller spillways spaced across this wide ledge. Oneida Falls is the second named waterfall along the Ganoga Glen trail, when you start from the top of the gorge in Ricketts Glen. This shot was captured during a hike with photographer Mark Van Scyoc The photograph was taken on Monday, April 25th, 2011 with a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens on a Canon EOS 10D DSLR body. The aperture was f/16 with an average shutter speed 1 second. The lens was set at the 17mm focal length. The camera’s ISO setting was 100. A Manfrotto 550B tripod and 222 head were used. This image has been processed in Photomatix Pro software, using five separate exposures from 2 stops under exposed to 2 stops over, in one stop increments. Ricketts Glen State Park is located at the junction of RT-118 and RT 487 in Fairmount Township, Pennsylvania, USA. The nearest town is Red Rock, PA, about half way between Williamsport and Wilkes Barre, PA. © 2011 Gene Walls All copyright and reproduction rights are retained by the artist.
