Numbers
**Numbers** explores one of the most familiar symbols in human existence. Every day we read them, write them, recognise them and rely on them, yet we rarely stop to think about what they truly represent beyond their practical use.
I decided to create this piece due to the lack of numbers in my portfolio. Rather than simply displaying numerals, I wanted to explore a deeper meaning hidden within something so ordinary.
During the development of this work, I discovered that the oldest verified person to have ever lived was Jeanne Calment of France, who reached the remarkable age of **122 years and 164 days** (21 February 1875 – 4 August 1997). That discovery inspired the decision to present the numbers from **1 to 122**.
Each of us is moving towards a number that we will one day reach but can never know in advance. We often measure our lives by birthdays and age, but I began to wonder what would happen if we viewed life differently—not as birthdays, but as chapters.
A chapter may span a single year or many years. Some chapters define us forever, while others quietly blend into the background. Certain numbers may represent childhood, education, relationships, loss, growth, healing or reinvention. Every person will divide these chapters differently because every life is unique.
Although these numbers appear simple, they invite reflection on time, mortality, memory and personal experience. They encourage the viewer to consider where they currently are within their own story and how the chapters behind them have shaped the person they have become.
Sometimes the most ordinary symbols can carry the deepest meanings.
