Mother and Child, 1894
Cyrus Dallin created this plaster bas-relief of Vittoria with Bertram, the couple's first child, shortly after moving from Salt Lake City to Roxbury, Massachusetts. (The couple had spent the first few years of the marriage in Dallin's home state of Utah.) Born in Lynn, Mass., Vittoria Dallin was a highly educated and accomplished woman. She taught art in the Boston Schools, published poems, articles and books, wrote and directed pageants, lectured on topics of art and culture, and advocated for suffrage, Indigenous rights, and other social issues.
