Mimbres Ritual
Mimbreños Zoomorphic Creature.
Mimbreños (Mimbres) People inhabited the region in what is now southwestern New Mexico along a forth-six mile long valley beginning around 100 AD. These prehistoric people left behind a fantastic, yet mysterious artistic, symbolic, and ritualistic legacy. Use of anthropo- and zoomorphic figures was quite common. Their exact meaning, however, lost in time. Similarities, nevertheless, show up in other cultures of the region.
These figures, while intriguing and eluding, provide insight into the life ways of this captivating culture. They had obvious cultural and religious ties to MesoAmerica as depicted in the numerous renditions of anthropomorphic creatures and fantastic animals on Mimbres pots.
When the Mimbreños moved away, they most likely integrated with other cultures in the region. It is believed that they, themselves, evolved from the Mogollon culture from the north, and that the Mogollon are possibly evolved from the Anasazi and/or Hohokam cultures.
One of the most horrendous occurrences is the looting, vandalism and molestation of ancient sites. We keep these places sacred and do not reveal locations discovered, however, there are those that search them out, remove ancient objects and deal in their sale and trade. This is no less treacherous than entering someone's abode and stealing from them. It is my belief that only bad will come to those who partake in such nefarious activity.
