Masque
Encaustic on board. Encaustic is one of the worlds oldest art forms. Used to produce the iconic paintings of the early Romans and Greek, encaustic literally means "to burn in". Encaustic utilises wax coloured with pure pigment and liquified with heat. A common technique of applying encaustic is to paint it onto the support, and use a flat iron to spread it. The results of this technique usually have a surreal fairytale feel to them. I use it more like paint, and indeed, apply it in concert with acrylic. Then I use a heatgun to shift it around the surface. If I want a glossy finish, I will use a flatiron. In this piece, I have carved into the surface while it was still warm, and then rubbed metallic and iridiscent pigments into the surface. Once quite dry, it can be polished with a soft cloth, to a glowing finish.... The resultant works are delicate - can't withstand knocks or extremes of heat or cold, but if cared for can last for hundreds or thousands of years.
