Language In Binary
Language In Binary We use letters every day without giving much thought to what they represent. They are the fundamental building blocks of written language — A through Z. This piece takes those familiar 26 letters and removes their visual identity, translating each one into its corresponding 8-bit binary representation. Beginning with A at the top left, the sequence progresses systematically through the alphabet until it reaches Z at the bottom right. Alongside the alphabet is one additional element: the binary representation of a space — 00100000. The space is not a letter, but it is just as important to written communication. Without spaces, individual words would merge together and language would become considerably harder to read. The piece explores the relationship between human language and machine language. What we see as letters, words and spaces can ultimately be reduced to patterns of ones and zeros that computers can understand. Something as familiar and human as the alphabet becomes something completely abstract when translated into binary. Language, reduced to code.
