    Hydrangea First Spring Bloom
Hydrangea is derived from Greek hydor meaning “water” and angeion meaning “vessel,” referring to the plant’s seed pods, which look like small water jugs. These beautiful perennials bloom from Spring to early Summer. These beautiful, fast growing shrubs are wonderful for filling in spaces in any garden. They can grow 15 feet. I have found, however, that keeping them trimmed down, allows them to become wider instead of taller. Planting in a sheltered space, on the North or South, allows them to thrive. A low soil ph will yield a blue / purple color, while a high ph soil will give you a pink/ red color. Whichever color you choose, you will marvel at the incredible blooms. In the late summer, when the blooms have faded, I will cut a stem and allow it to dry upside down. Once they are dried, I spray paint them, and use them for fall and winter dried flower arrangements.
