Haybarn, Rata
Rata is a small settlement in the Manawatu, New Zealand, located on State Highway 1 on flats above the Rangitikei River. If you google for it, you will be most disappointed, because having combed through a bunch of businesses using Rata in their name (aaaargh!), and having gone past the entries for the tree Rata (from the Pohutukawa family) you will find - zilch. Even Wikipedia admits defeat. In 1979 I was on a geology field trip, sampling soils on the high river flats close to Rata when I found this fantastic old haybarn - no more than a roof on poles - loaded with bales of hay. It was crouched under a huge Macrocarpa pine tree, which really 'made' the scene. I had a camera with me, as well as a pencil and a small drawing pad, so I took a photo, then leaned against the farm fence and took a break. This was the result, plus 2 or 3 other sketches from the trip. I later did a painting of this scene (which I no longer have), but there is a slide, and I must see what I can do about getting that into decent digital format. Just north of Rata and farther upstream on the river, is the famous Mangaweka Gorge - a spectacular run of scenery where the river has cut down through the papa stone, leaving what tourist guides refer to as 'a scenic masterpiece' of sheer cliffs. Earlier in the '70s, when I used to travel up here from Wellington by train, the sight of this brilliant scenery in the early morning light as the railway line skirted the river and crossed side streams on high-slung steel viaducts was always a consolation for coming to the end of the Christmas holidays.
