    Gullfoss
"Gullfoss"; Southwest Iceland. 4/28/2016. Camera: Nikon D5000. Lens: Nikkor 70-3oomm @ 70mm, 3 seconds, f/22, ISO 100. If you look closely, you can see a few people in the top left part of the photo over looking the falls. This shot was extremely difficult as the temperature was in the mid 30's, the wind was howling at 30 mph sustained winds with larger gusts, and spray from the falls kept soaking my lens (also, there was a husband and wife who kept pestering me to fix their camera settings because, "I look like I know what I am doing.") Gullfoss waterfall is in the river Hvíta which has its origin in the glacier lake Hvitavatn at Langjokull glacier. It is called the 'Golden Falls', since on a sunny day the water looks golden as it plunges down a staircase of numerous falls. In the early 1900's the falls were owned by neighboring farmers Tomas Tomasson and Halldor Halldorsson. Foreign investors had their sights set on building a hydroelectric power plant at Gullfoss. Legend has it that Tomas's daughter, Sigriour Tomasdottir, walked barefoot all the way from Gullfoss to Rekjavik in protest. She threatened to throw herself over the falls if a power plant was built. The power plant was never built and there is a memorial site of Sigriour at the top of the falls.
