    GREAT APE
DO THE GREAT APES NEED HUMAN RIGHTS? - We are humans and at the same time, great apes. Being members of the human species gives us a high moral status: belonging to a circle of moral equals. All those in this circle have the right to special moral protection, in our view. There are things we must not do to them. They have basic rights which are denied to those who stand outside this sphere of moral equality. Supported by renowned primatologists, the Great Ape Project fights to expand the “fellowship of equals”. It would then be a punishable crime to harm great apes in medical experiments, to keep them in degrading captive conditions, to condemn them to death, or to destroy their living space. Because great apes have awareness, are able to mentally put themselves in others’ shoes, and can think about the future, they should be recognised as persons and respected as individuals.
