Gulangyu Island, China: The Consulate Inn sign. The Consulate Inn, or Yongshun Hotel, is the former British Consulate in Gulangyu. Following the Chinese loss in the First Opium War, Xiamen (then known as Amoy) became one of five "treaty ports" established by the Treaty of Nanjing in 1842, and Gulangyu became the main residential area for foreigners.
