Aztec Monkey Motif
The monkey is one of 20 Mexican calendar signs and typically represented a spider monkey, which is one of three species of monkey that are native to Mexico. The monkey was a creature has long been associated to many ancient Mesoamerican gods as an aspect of their character. Monkeys were considered a "companion spirit" for humans and gods and were endeared for the playfulness. Those born under the calendar sign of the Monkey were thought to be cheerful, friendly and clever. The spider monkey was also associated with the god of the wind, Quetzalcóatl-Ehécatl. The monkey motif was worn as ear ornaments, often made of shell, obsidian and pyrite. According to legends, one of their four previous Sun-World era of the 4-Winds was destroyed by hurricanes and humans were transformed into monkeys.
