ABOUT Two Trees and Fig Leaves in the Garden of Desire
When it came to doing the Two of Trees, I had fun with the Garden of Eden story and related tree of life symbols.
THE POEM
Around the time I was putting together this painting, I took a poetry workshop with Karla Linn Merrifield. She introduced the idea of a “Rainbow” or “Roy G. Biv” poem where you refer to all the colors in the visible spectrum.
The Garden of Desire
There are snakes in the greenest garden, trees bursting with fruit,
orange and yellow, while exotic birds with startling plumage
sing of love and loss, and the descending night shifts the light, blue to indigo to violet, the sun sinking blood red below the azure horizon.
THE LAYERS
Layer One – In the background I sketched the central portion of Gustav Klimt’s painting “The Tree of Live” to become the background of the painting.
Layer Two – Then on each side of Klimt’s tree of life, I placed the Adam and Eve figures based on Albrecht Dürer’s amazing etching.
Layer Three – Then I duplicated a tree and snake based a painting in the tomb of Inherkha in which the sun god Ra in the form of a cat kills a giant snake under a sacred Sycamore tree.
Layer Four –Over the first tree I superimposed another based on Egyptian tree of life painting with the fantastic birds. This tree has been reproduced thousands of times, but I believe the original was found in tomb #3 of Beni Hasan.
Layer Five – The last layer added the number 2s in the opposing corners with fig leaves instead of clubs and the two strategically placed fig leaves in the middle.
Finally, I used color to try to merge the figures into the trees, making Adam and Eve part nature of along with the snakes and the birds.
