View Larger on Chockstone Photography Sierra Nevada Rocks reside in Point Nepean National Park on Portsea back beach, towards the end of Mornington Peninsula. They have been named after the iron ship the Sierra Nevada, which was built in 1877 and went down in the waters surrounding Port Phillip bay. Perhaps it was caught in the famous powerful rip tide and encountered a treacherous rocky outcrop such as this one. Getting to this location takes something of an adventurous spirit, requiring tunnelling through a cave at low tide. Park at London Bridge car park, walk down onto the beach and head west for 15 minutes or so, you will soon work it out. Care should be taken to consider an exit strategy in the event of being cut off by the tide. The cliffs are sharp and crumbling, so leave enough time to return through the cave. The first few times I tried to shoot this scene the weather turned bad and all I got was dull shades of grey. On this attempt it looked no better. A mixture of wind and rain combined with biting sand continued pummelling me for nearly an hour as I stood before the subject, hoping for something, anything to happen in the clouds. Incredibly, just before sunset, the wind abated, a perfect gap opened in the sky and suddenly it was all systems go. Amazingly the colour only intensified as the light dimmed. I was still shooting and reshooting until it was completely dark, and left knowing I had the best of it.
