View Larger on Chockstone Photography Shoal Bay is a popular beach holiday destination not far from Port Stephens on the New South Wales mid-north coast. A relatively short walk up nearby Tomaree Head (inside Tomaree National Park) will yield great views in all directions. I’d tried to capture this scene a few times before, but could never quite get the right mix of light and lack of wind. On this trip I was determined to make it work. Setting up my tripod on the metal walk-way produced far too many vibrations from constant foot traffic, but all other locations did not offer a clear line of sight across the hills without being blocked by shrubs. Finally after a couple of hours of experimentation I had the perfect set up. The next challenge was flare. Shooting straight into the direct light of the setting sun is always problematic. Fortunately there are some tricks that can be employed to work around it. I fired shot after shot, glued to my spot until twilight set. Descending in the near dark I had that happy internal glow that told me I’d just captured a beautiful scene.
