"View Larger on Chockstone Photography":http://www.chockstonephotos.com/Australian-Print.asp?ID=1000 Wyrrabalong National Park resides on the New South Wales central coast, not far from Norah Head. It represents the last section coastal rainforest in the region and contains some dramatically colourful red gums, as well as diverse wildlife. A network of walking tracks allows visitors to explore the park. Whilst doing so myself, I came away knowing that I had to find an image here. Something that exhibited the amazing gum trees at their best. I geo-tagged several potential locations on my phone, and wrote myself some notes, determined to return under better conditions. Some days later, still mid-way through a photography trip, there was heavy rain forecast. You might assume the natural response would be to drive away, seeking clearer skies, but for the landscape photographer rain can be a good thing, particularly in woodlands. Firstly because wet foliage tends to draw out colour from a forest scene, and secondly because, rain can create layers of separation much like fog. Armed with an umbrella and raincoat I quickly hiked back to each composition, selected the best, and set up my camera gear. There was some wind, which is to be expected, but waiting for lulls and reshooting many times with a fast shutter speed, solved that issue. I chose a farily long focal length to avoid including too much sky and captured images at a variety of focus points. Some weeks later, I was able to focus stack the final image, to ensure depth of field carried from the foreground feature tree to the background trees.
