View Larger on Chockstone Photography Mt Difficult, in the heart of the Grampians National Park, is aptly named. In my youth I’d hike up it with friends and rock climb the exposed cliff faces with the kind of go-all-day vigour that I can only now appreciate. Returning in my 40’s, burdened this time by heavy camera gear instead of climbing gear, I found the hike dreadfully tiring and I like to think I’m still reasonable fit. Seven hours of total walking time through the summer heat, plus a couple of hours shooting the sunset, had me safely back at my car by head torch, gulping water with feet on fire and an ache in every muscle. With all that said, I can still very much recommend the walk for the views alone. There is a stream about three quarters of the way up and an official campsite just shy of the summit, so the smarter move might be to break the hike down into two days with a night on top. This would also open up the possibility for exploring the summit ridge tracks leaving your gear at camp. One final note, the track up does contain a fair amount of scrambling over (and sometimes under) boulders, which isn’t necessarily everyone’s cup of tea when carrying a lot of kit.
