Approaching the Castle, Budawangs, Morton National Park, New South Wales, Australia
Australian Landscape Photography by Michael Boniwell. All images copyright. This is a tack 95 megapixel image, suitable for enormous enlargements. View Larger on Chockstone Photography "The Castle" is a rocky mountain that rises out of the Budawang Range in Morton National Park and offers amazing views if you can manage the grueling hike. Late one summer I made my first attempt on this peak ultimately failing to reach the summit due to complete exhaustion, route finding issues, and a dwindling water supply. The route begins with a river crossing. Shoes and pants off, leeches on. That dealt with, I skirted around a snake and headed up, and up and up. It's seriously steep, with each step requiring clambering over obstacles. Hauling on tree roots, crawling over and under boulders, slushing through mud and undergrowth are the order of the day. After slithering through a tunnel, lowering out on some old fixed ropes, solo climbing some exposed boulders, it was well after mid-night and getting very hard to find the track. My last hour of upward progress had yielded only a few meters and I was completely spent. I bailed, heading back down with pain in both knees and legs on fire. Fortunately I'd managed to capture this image as the sun set, so I didn't come away empty handed. I also have a plan of attack for a return visit. My undoing was carrying way too much camera equipment, and not planning the water situation well enough. I shall return!
