George Silver
George Silver (c. 1550/60s - 1620s) was a 16th-17th century British nobleman and fencing enthusiast, the eldest of four brothers, one of which, Toby, was an also accomplished swordsman.
We all know him for his strong opinions on the proper method of fencing (to put it mildly) as he strongly opposed the contemporary continental traditions, ahem Italians. To the point where Silver even challenged one of this "targets" to a duel, but later states that no formal match occurred.
In 1599, Silver published a treatise entitled "Paradoxes of Defence" or how I like to call it "Oh how I hate Rapiers... and Italians". All Jokes aside now, he did really speak out against the wildly popular rapier, detailing what he sees as its inherent flaws as well as those of the foreign fencing styles that emphasise it.
Talk about being vocal.
About the painting itself, this one was as much of a challenge as Fiore was, really hard to work from such a low resolution picture that wasn't the most anatomically correct to begin with. Still after some studies and some overlays I managed to try and piece things together and make a possible image from the ones we have access to.
