Duchess RAS
On location in the Pacific Ocean... I took this picture of HMAS Duchess in 1971, as a young sailor serving on the carrier HMAS Melbourne. What is happening is a RAS, Replenishment At Sea, and the Melbourne is fuelling the Duchess with furnace fuel oil (FFO - commonly known as foo-foo by the sailors) and in this way the steam boilers of the escorting warship can continue with longer range and their support of the carrier will last further and longer. Today's modern ships are driven by gas turbine and diesel and often by both together. In my Navy, real ships were steamers! Sometimes the elements in the open ocean are not the best for this type of work and it is clearly dangerous in these big seas with the ships steaming so close together. This shot speaks volumes of the professionalism within the men of the Navy (It was 1970, and we didn't have ladies at sea then. Today the ladies are in there with this work, enjoying the excitement of it as we always did!). I used my trusty Yashica J 35mm rangefinder camera (remember those?) and Kodak 100 BW film. From a scan of the negative, which is pretty old now but clearly not too bad quality!
