John Gaspard Le Marchant (9 February 1766 – 22 July 1812). Although technically not a fencing master per se, not in the same context at least that some other fencing masters in this collection were, was still a notable figure, enough so to be a part of this project.
I won't highlight his every achievement but I will try to explain why I decided to paint his portrait.
Well firstly there was already a portrait of him, but the one I based myself on was just a drawing, much like it happened with all other fencing masters here.
Secondly he is responsable for the creation of the 1796 Light Cavalry sabre, which on his own is enough achievement as, since most of you know, I'm a sabreur myself and even have a synthetic version of this sword. So I figured it would be nice to see the man behind the sabre (or... meat cleaver you know...)
Thirdly he is also responsible for his manual "Rules and Regulations of the Sword Exercise of the Cavalry", which was adopted by the british army as part of their regulations also in that year of 1796. His illustrations and remarks helped pave the way for more material to surface as he was the first to put to paper the "six cuts" (believed to have been originated from the Hungarians or Austrians, something that is also used on foot for instances.
Of course there is much more that could be listed but I just wanted to open the door for you to take a closer look at the man, and obviously didn't want this to be the main focal point, which is the portrait itself.
Hope you liked it and there's more to come soon.
