The Smew (Mergellus albellus) is a small, striking diving duck found across northern Europe and Asia. In winter, it migrates south to parts of central and western Europe and Asia, favoring lakes, rivers, and estuaries. Males are easily recognized by their striking black-and-white plumage, while females and juveniles have gray bodies with chestnut heads, earning them the nickname "redhead." Smews dive to catch their primary diet of small fish, along with aquatic insects and crustaceans. Known for their agile swimming, they are less often seen walking on land due to their short legs. This bird is the only member of the genus Mergellus and closely related to other mergansers.
