Golden Gate from Above
I approached this aerial view by first establishing the great diagonal sweep of the Golden Gate Bridge across the water. The bay was painted in layered blue, turquoise, and sandy washes, with plenty of white paper left visible to keep the scene airy. I then built the bridge in transparent reds, strengthening the nearest tower while letting the farther one recede into the landscape. The tiny vehicles were added last. I wanted the painting to express both the bridge’s enormous scale and the surprising grace of its design.
