Captain Spavento
An illustration by Maurice Sand of Captain Spavento. Spavento is an example of the Capitano from the Commedia dell'Arte. Capitanos were usually loud boastful braggarts, soldiers who were often not as courageous as they claimed to be, and certainly not as virtuous as one might hope... (note the cobweb on his sword...) This Capitano is unmasked - Capitano characters are generally played with a mask, but this varied depending on the particular type of captain and the era.
