Before Downtown
I painted this neighborhood street for the contrast between its older apartment buildings and the modern towers appearing at the far end. I began with a careful pencil framework for the windows, cornices, fire escapes, and parked cars, then softened everything with pale peach, cream, blue, and gray washes. The trees were brushed in more loosely to keep the architecture from feeling too formal.
