Stony Creek Trestle Bridge, Lakes Entrance, Victoria, Australia

View Larger on Chockstone Photography Stony Creek Trestle Bridge was constructed of red ironbark and grey box timber back in 1916 as part of a Bairnsdale to Orbost rail line. As rail projects go, it covered some of the most difficult terrain encountered in the state yet managed to stay in service for over 60 years. At 20 metres high and an impressive 247 metres long the old historic bridge is certainly eye catching. Stony Creek Nature Reserve, inside Colquhoun State Forest, can easily be accessed by car. Only a short drive from the ever-popular seaside town of Lakes Entrance it makes a great family outing for travelers visiting the area. When I first found this location some years ago I immediately saw its potential for a landscape photo. Initially I was fixated on capturing it in fog, and drove the many hours to get there a few times only to find the forecast was erroneous. Dishearten I gave up on it, but as time passed I found myself travelling through the east of the state more often and would, occasionally, attempt a sunrise here. Wind and overcast cloud frustrated my attempts, until eventually I was granted a cloudless still morning. Taking a step back and letting go of preconceived ideas, I found a composition that, in hindsight is obvious, and benefits greatly from the lovely golden light of dawn streaming straight into the lens - by far the best image I have of this scene.
