View Larger on Chockstone Photography The Flinders Ranges is the largest mountain range in South Australia. Residing some 200 km north west of Adelaide and occupying 430 km, it's a popular tourist destination. Most people start their exploration from Wilpena Pound, a large natural amphitheatre covering nearly 80 square kilometers and containing a useful petrol station (you are somewhat in the middle of no-where) and campground with facilities. Being a national park, there are plenty of walks, but fair warning the place can get hot and dry being more akin to a desert wilderness. Alternatively there are also some great scenic drives, 4-wheel drive not required, though it wouldn't be out of place. The big mountain ranges offer some stunning landscape opportunities. I've also spent a couple of weeks there once doing nothing but rock climbing at Moonarie, one of the more impressive crags. All up a highly recommended adventure holiday destination.
