    Platts Falls
These falls, on what is now known as Frenchmans Creek were once a prime attraction for visitors to Millgrove (near Warburton in the Yarra Valley outside Melbourne). They have since the 1940’s, been ignored, neglected and all but forgotten. For many years legal access was extremely difficult due to the annexation of the O’Shannassy aqueduct in restricted Melbourne water land. A few years back however, this aqueduct was superseded by an underground pipeline and the aqueduct turned into a popular walking trail so access is now much easier (before this the only legal way to visit was via a difficult bush bash down the hill from Ben Cairn). To get there park your car at the Dee Road O’Shannassy Aqueduct car park and walk west for a km or so past a few creeks until you get to the first aqueduct bridge just past Frenchmans Creek. Cross this and follow the old overgrown tramway route upstream for half a km until it disappears then continue off track for another 500m or so until you reach the falls. The off track section is reasonably lengthy and rough, 500m off track feels many times further due to the very slow progress. I would not recommend this walk unless you have some off track experience. The difference in waterflow from yesteryear to today is quite staggering, it being a mere fraction of what it was as the pictures show. Obviously flow levels have been reduced for a long time to allow the almost complete inundation of plant life over the former stream bed. Historical Note: Old timers say that Frenchmans Creek and Platts Creeks, as they appear on todays survey maps, have had their names transposed. Frenchmans should be Platts, and Platts should be Frenchmans. The falls became popular during the timber milling era early this century when Platts mill operated nearby and a tramway followed the creek to near the falls.
