View Larger on Chockstone Photography JB Plain Hut sits nested amongst some lovely gums on Mt Hotham, not far from Dinner Plain. I’d driven past it a few times and one day finally took the time to check it out. Realising there was a shot there I returned some months later when the summer flowers were about. Driving through the night and arriving in the dark ahead of the dawn, as I am accustom to do, I spent my usual time looking for compositions and settled on this one. When the sun came up, however, my flowers stubbornly refused to wake. Patiently I sat, tripod up, finger on the remote, but the sleepy vegetation did not so much as yawn, even when direct sun invaded the forest. Finally by mid-morning my flowers opened, but by this time the light was harsh and deeply shadowed. I needed some clouds. A check of my phone revealed possible showers by mid-day, so I continued my vigil, growing progressively more bored, but determined to see it through. By lunchtime sporadic clouds had wafted into the otherwise blue sky. I willed them to cover the sun. Pleaded with them. They would swirl tantalisingly close and then veer away teasing me. Just when I was about to pack it in and great big dark cloud appeared and immediately dominated the sky, diffusing my light wonderfully. I worked quickly trying a few variations, but before long it started to drizzle disturbing my pesky petals. The window of opportunity had closed, but I left feeling confident that I’d captured the scene at its best.
