View Larger on Chockstone Photography The first time I hiked Mt Howitt, some 30 years ago, I was young lad struggling to keep up with my long legged father, but enjoying every minute of it. Having approached from the north across several peaks, and long since run out of water, darkness found us before we could make Vallejo Gantner Hut and its little stream. We built a dry camp, not far from where this shot was taken, and ate anything we had with liquid in it. In the morning, of course, we found the hut only 10 minutes further on! Fast forward to the present day, and here I was again, only this time in winter. Having approached from the south the walk was much easier. I trekked up in the dark ahead of the dawn, and captured this image near the summit ridge just as the sun rose and forced its way through the fog and gloom. The weather vastly improved shortly afterwards and I spent a wonderful day alone on the mountain top whilst wait for the sun to set over another composition.
