View Larger on Chockstone Photography Crystal Shower Falls lies a short distance within the ever lush Dorrigo National Park, a tangled rainforest filled with bird-life and tumbling waterfalls. A cavern formed by an eroded volcanic ash bed sits behind the falls providing a sheltered position from which to observe the sight. On my first attempt at capturing this scene there was simply too much water. The camera became saturated and the lens fogged in humid conditions. I returned a couple of years later to find the water more sedate, but having arrived too late, the trees were already dappled by sunlight. Finally on this trip, determined to get the shot, I arrived at the crack of dawn. The spray was manageable, the trees evenly lit, so I set up and waited for the light to brighten. Incredibly visitors started appearing in throngs. Every time I was about to fire the shutter another one would pop into view, clambering around the water in groups of five or six. I needed a minute or two clear to get the job done, but as one wave ended another would crest. A hour or more past and despair set in as the canopy above started to become dappled. Finally a window appeared. I had to plead with one elderly man to pause a few moments longer, and a child was standing in exactly the right position to be obscured by a tree trunk, but my gap was there and I took with glee. Happy days.
