Australian Landscape Photography by Michael Boniwell. All images copyright. This is image is suitable for enormous prints. View Larger on Chockstone Photography Welshpool is a small coastal town in the South Gippsland region of Victoria. Surrounded by rolling green hills, generally lush and green, it is an ideal country setting. At the heart of this little village resides their Long Jetty which runs to 800 metres in length. Originally constructed in 1938 it hosts an old winch shed with a certain historic charm that makes for a good focal point. I love a nice pier photograph, and upon discovering this location a couple of years ago, was initially quite excited. However there is one element that proved very challenging to a landscape photographer, namely the fierce and seemingly ever present coastal wind storms. There’s a reason why you’ll see many huge windmills dotted along the hills about Welshpool. During some attempts the gale was so wild that not only was it impossible to steady a tripod, but we’d be lucky to stand at all. On one occasion, during a father-son trip, our boy and I shot through a rain shower. The wind didn’t let up, but the light was so moody and we kept at it. Our lad came away with a nice capture, but the perfectionist in me would not let me be happy with mine despite the pleasing light. I needed either less wind or greater stability to render fine details. Fast forward to yet another trip and again we were lined up at what was becoming a very familiar setting. The jetty angled away from our lenses leading the viewer’s eye towards the setting sun, which just needed some colour. Incredibly, this time there was little to no wind. People were taking advantage of the weather, strolling up and down the long deck. Fishermen were busy, couples walked arm in arm, children played and one brave soul even went for a dip. It was a lovely spot to spend an evening. We waited, then lo and behold the sun found a gap in the clouds and right on cue the scene transformed into a spectacular display. We both shot right into twilight, but I preferred the cloud shapes that sunset provided. The nett result is this image, which hopefully depicts the excitement we both felt. If you're in the area do not forget to also check out Agnes Falls or at least take a drive up to Silcocks Hill Lookout which offers a commanding view across the whole coastline. You’re also not far from Tarra Bulga National Park which is a must visit, family friendly forest experience, just be careful on the windy roads. Fish & Chips at nearby Port Albert docks is also worth the minor detour.
