Tacking Point Lighthouse, Port Macquarie, New South Wales, Australia
Australian Landscape Photography by Michael Boniwell. All images copyright. This is a tack sharp 100 megapixel image, suitable for enormous enlargements. View Larger on Chockstone Photography Tacking Point Lighthouse resides in Port Macquarie, a small coastal town in northern New South Wales. Built in 1879 it's Australia's third oldest lighthouse, though at only 8 metres high, it's far from tall. Over 20 ships were wrecked before the lighthouse was established, the first going down in 1823. A nice, 9km costal walk runs from the town beach over to the lighthouse, although you can also drive right up to it. Bring a jacket, because this is one windy place. Having photographed this scene quite a few times now, despite the 30hr drive, I will say I'm impressed by the number of people who get out of bed to witness the dawn. There must be something about this location that encourages vigour. There are always people fishing from the rocks, trekking up and down the beach or just patiently awaiting the arrival of the sun. Maybe it's the brisk salty air, but I can''t help feeling energized by this place.
