View Larger on Chockstone Photography South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula, residing just south of Adelaide is very popular. It’s probably best known for its vineyards and surf beaches, as well as being the stepping off point to the wonderful Kangaroo Island. What’s possibly less known, however, is just how many tiny little seaside towns there are dotted along the rugged coastline that offer both stunning scenery and what can only be described as “charm”. I’d visited this area before to explore the cliff tops, but this time I wanted to capture the little pier with the rolling hills behind it. With only a single day to use I was determined to make the most of it. I had my position set up by lunch time and simply waited. People came and went, fishing, swimming and sightseeing. Clear blue skies turned to heavy cloud, cleared again, then covered once more this time bringing rain. I hunched down under my umbrella and continued my vigil, occasionally firing shots as the day progressed. The light on the hills and water was forever changing both in intensity and hue. Just as the sun began to set the cloud to the west cleared while the storm over the east persisted offering pockets of brilliant golden light that spot lit the hills. These gaps were small. Cloud shadows wandered across my scene, sometimes hiding the pier and lighting the hills, and sometimes the opposite. Finally a moment occurred when the light filled the valley whole, if only for a short while, allowing me to capture the image shown here. I stayed on until twilight, but by then the cloud had cleared again. Packing up and making my way back to the car, a little sore from sitting on rocks for so long, I was certain I had caught the light at its best.
