Artwork thumbnail, Rust - Ruston - Rustenberg by serendip
    Rust - Ruston - Rustenberg
Detail of rust and shadows on an old traction steam engine parked up at the Peregrine Farmstall on the N2 as it runs through Apple Country in the Western Cape of South Africa. It dates back to 1916 and was imported from Ruston, Lincoln in the UK. It would be towed by animals (presumably oxen) to work in the fields where the flywheel belt would be attached to another piece of farm machinery such as a thresher thus providing mechanical power as opposed to the muscle power of men or animals Such were the early days of the Industrial Revolution. It was last used in 1975 in Rustenberg. It remains virtually intact to this day.
