View Larger on Chockstone Photography Pickerings Hut sits nestled amongst some colourful deciduous trees on the banks of the Howqua River not far from Mansfield. Built in the late 1950’s it was constructed without the use of nails, just a system of groves. The near-by Pickerings Flat campground is excellent, as are several other camping sites within a few short kilometres, including Sheepyard Flat and Frys Flat all of which make up an region known as the Howqua Hills Historic Area. Arriving in the dark ahead of the dawn I chose my composition and waited. With the morning came rain, but as luck would have it my big umbrella, always with me, was nowhere to be found. The camera, tripod and I crouched under a couple of raincoats and waited. The scene looked good even through the drizzle, but it wasn’t until the rain stopped and sun entered the valley that the magic happened bringing glistening colours to the amazing autumn foliage. I threw off the coats and got to work, capturing this image before the light became too intense. For anyone wanting to really fill a wall I’ve an alternative version of this scene covering a much wider aspect ratio.
