Murray River Big Bend, South Australia
Australian Landscape Photography by Michael Boniwell. All images copyright. This is a tack sharp 93 megapixel image, suitable for enormous enlargements. View Larger on Chockstone Photography Big Bend in South Australia is the longest single bend in the Murray River. The area is known for its spectacular limestone cliffs, which are the tallest along the Murray and hundreds of millions of years old. Driving 10 hours straight I managed to arrive well ahead of the dawn. My progress, slowed to a sedate pace through the wee-small hours, was punctuated by moments of excitement when the inevitable kangaroos made an appearance. My tyres a little slimmer I finally pulled into town only have the GPS ask me, in an eerily friendly voice for that time of the morning, to “please board ferry”. Incredibly one materialised out of the dark, its operator floating into view like the hooded spirit of purgatory, despite the hour. After a couple of hours searching river banks I had nice scene composed, but it required twilight so I spent the day lying by the water, sleeping and reading in the shade. When the sunset I was not disappointed. The cliffs, already colourful took on a bright orange glow and the cloud, ever a rare commodity in this part of the country, decided to drift on by right on cue. The next day there was a dust storm, so I was pretty happy to have capture this shot when I did.
