Lightning Strike, Streaky Bay Jetty, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia
Australian Landscape Photography by Michael Boniwell. All images copyright. This is image is suitable for enormous prints. View Larger on Chockstone Photography Streaky Bay resides on the Eyre Peninsula, a long way west of Port Augusta in South Australia. It is a good eight hours drive from Adelaide, plus breaks. Something of a commitment in terms of distance, but it makes up for that with some cool stuff in the form of abundant bird life, coastal scenery, rock formations and places to catch a bite to eat. You can also fish or swim right off the pier, and find walks or scenic drives not far out of town. During this particular landscape photography tour of South Australia, we ran into some serious car trouble. The automatic transmission in our six year old Subaru Forester died quite unexpectedly resulting in the largest bill for vehicle repairs I have ever had put in front of me and an extended stay in this peaceful little village. Stressing about the car did not help, so I concentrated on making images. Shooting at the jetty each sunset and sunrise, we eventually came away with quite a selection of images from which to choose. This one was from our very last evening in town. In fact we were all packed and ready to finally get back on the road with a now, hopefully, well-functioning car, but could not resist another sunset attempt. A storm had been brewing most of the afternoon and chose the end of the day to break. By the time twilight had set in, there was a flurry of lightning strikes out at sea, just beyond the jetty. Whilst delighted onlookers exclaimed excitedly or ran for cover, we kept shooting over and over hoping to capture a strike on camera. I composed for the jetty, and just crossed by fingers the lightning would play ball and land somewhere appropriate. Amazingly it worked. Out of dozens of failed frames, this one captured the biggest and closest strike positioned perfectly right at the end of the pier. Moments later the rain hit. We had seconds to grab gear and run for the relative safety of the shop fronts. What an experience to end our stay in Streaky Bay.
