Island Arch, Twelve Apostles National Park, Victoria, Australia
Australian Landscape Photography by Michael Boniwell. All images copyright. This is image is suitable for enormous prints. View Larger on Chockstone Photography The Island Arch is a curious sandstone and limestone formation that rises out of ocean near Loch Ard Gorge on Victoria's fabulous Great Ocean Road. It is best view from Tom and Eva Lookout, named after the two teenage survivors of the wreck of the Loch Ard from 1878. Visitors to the famous Twelve Apostles will likely be familiar with this scene. Some may recall that in 2009 the arch collapsed forming the two separate sea stacks. Being only a few hours from home I have had the pleasure of photographing this coastline for several decades, both before and after the incident. To me it looks just as dramatic now as it did back then, and is certainly worth the thousands of visitors that flock to this location every day. With a bit of planning I was able to choose a time of the year in which the setting sun lined up perfectly with the former archway. The next issue was people. Knowing full well that this lookout becomes overcrowded on weekends I managed to slip down mid-week and, at least on this occasion, found the famously wild weather willing to cooperate. A band of low cloud blocked some of the horizon line, but that helped to reduce flare and dark shadows whilst still giving us that awesome golden light, which coated the view in warmth and drama.
