View Larger on Chockstone Photography Hanging Rock is an amazing rock feature near Baltzer Lookout in the Blue Mountains, not far from Blackheath in New South Wales. Over 100 metres high it’s split away from the main cliff and towers over the Grose Valley like some kind of preposterous guardian. Caught here in the dawn light I managed to capture fingers of sunlight piecing through the valley haze, while darker storm clouds hovered, moving away to the west. From the car park the lookout is an easy 45 minute walk downhill, making this a fairly family friendly hike. The return trip might take a tad longer. Note, however, the cliff is unstable in parts and the scramble down to Hanging Rock means getting really close to that drop off, so if you do bring little ones, you’ll want to take care. It is technically possible to jump across from the mainland onto Hanging Rock itself, but again, I’d advise extreme caution.
