Hanging Rock is an amazing rock feature near Baltzer Lookout in the Blue Mountains, not far from Blackheath in New South Wales. Over 100 metres high it is split away from the main cliff and towers over the Grose Valley like some kind of preposterous guardian.
As we stood in the dawn light, waiting for the sun, a fellow hiker decided to brave a dangerous leap onto this crazy structure and pose. Normally I do everything I can to avoid people in my landscape images, but on this occasion I felt the tiny figure helped to exhibit a sense of the grand scale this valley offers.
From the car park the lookout is an easy 45 minute walk downhill. The return trip uphill takes longer, but is still reasonably achievable being mostly on a dirt road. Note, the trail beside the cliff is just for walkers and rock climbers. It is well maintained, but the cliff itself could be unstable and is very exposed. There nothing but common sense between you and the void. I would advise extreme caution.
